Alice Wilkie was born on December 24, 1902, in Riverton, Illinois, USA. Alice Wilkie’s father was Thomas Wilkie, who was an English grocery business proprietor.
In 1923, Alice moved to New York City and became a member of George White’s Scandals.
She appeared on the show for numerous seasons and rose to prominence as a famous dancer. In 1925, the lovely brunette made her debut in The Ziegfeld Folles.
Alice also posed for James Montgomery Flagg and Alfred Cheney Johnston, among others. She decided to start her own company, Alice Wilke Inc., to develop her musicals.
She stated in an interview that “I intend to work my way up to the top of the entertainment industry. I recognize that this will be a difficult undertaking, but I am determined to succeed.”
She left show business after a brief stint with the Ringling Brothers circus in 1927. Then she married pharmaceutical businessman Robert Turner Browning and moved to Short Hills, New Jersey.
The couple, who had never had children before, enjoyed entertaining guests and going to the movies. They had a happy marriage until Robert died in 1969.
Alice later entered a nursing facility in New Jersey, where she lived the rest of her life.
She died on August 30, 1987, at the age of eighty-four. She is interred in Front Royal, Virginia’s Prospect Hill Cemetery
