It has also grown as a companion of choice while consuming food for many. It’s a great way to complement and enhance foods around the world.  Especially when you live in a state known for its vineyards and wine clubs, adding some wine to your daily cooking wouldn’t be a problem.

    Its ability to fuse with dishes of different cuisines has rightly made it into a kitchen essential. Adding a bit of wine to your culinary habits can lift your cooking skills immensely. Know what’s the best part? You don’t need to be a well-rounded chef or cook to know this easy hack. To help you get started, here are ten suggestions on how to add wine to your table and cooking.  

    • Choice of wine: 

    The first step to cooking with wine has to be the choice of wine. As a rule of thumb, remember red for red and white for white. White wines like Chardonnay go well with chicken and seafood, while red wines like Merlot complement beef and bacon wonderfully. It is important to consider that each wine has its flavor, and you should always go for that which you would pair best with the nature of your dish. But remember, untested wine means unpredictable flavor. When you visit the wine aisle while shopping, being spoilt for choice is a real thing.

It is always advisable to start with a smaller amount of wine and work your way up once you understand the proportions. A useful tip is to keep tasting as you add the wine to have an idea. Excessive addition of wine turns the dish undesirably sour and acidic. 

    5)   Concentrating wine: 

    One technique used to concentrate wine is to simmer it in a pan until the visible volume reduces. Why should this be done, you ask? So that the alcohol content is reduced and the organic flavor of the wine is achieved. This can enhance its flavor a lot. Now you have semi-dried wine ready to be added to sauces, curries, pastes, and whatnot. 

    6)   Leftover wine:

    If all your cooking efforts translate to wastage of food being minimized, then you’re doing it right. The same can be applied to wine. Your leftover wine should not go to waste. To ‘recycle’ wine, you can use the above-mentioned technique of concentrating wine, which reduces its alcohol quantity. The resulting mix is ready to use in vegetable curries and meats. Another way is to simply freeze the wine. Use ice trays to turn them into flavorful cubes of wine to be used later.  

    7)   Pair similar flavors: 

    The most optimum way to pair food with wine is a wine selection that has flavors closest to the dish you’re making. The pairing will go well if the spices and the wine work in conjunction. So, a citrusy dish like Pasta will go well with a Blanc or a Pinot wine that has a lemony essence. If you’re planning a BBQ night, Malbec will do wonders for the meat on the grill. Doing this will result in the best combination and, eventually, a delicious dish. 

    8)   Wine with Dessert: 

    Indeed, most people don’t comprehend the true potential wine brings to the kitchen. It is not restricted to just the spicier dishes. Wine can be a worthy addition to different desserts as well. Dessert after a main course meal is a food lover’s ideal finish. Trying out different wines to see what suits which dessert can be the way to go. For people who like to keep it simple, wines like the Riesling add to the sweetness of fruit desserts. Chocolate-based desserts can be complemented with the Sherry. Your dessert consumption will be ever sweeter if you can pull this off properly.   

    9)   Use local: 

    Before you add wine to your cuisine, it is important to research. Look into different wine cultures and wines special to different regions. Simply put, if you’re cooking something French, try using wines that are produced in France. Italian cuisine will be furthered if cooked with Italian-produced wines. Knowing the regions and their cuisines allows you to make the best decision when it comes to pairing them with wine. 

    10)  Keep Experimenting: 

    Lastly, it is always important to keep experimenting. Cooking with wine is an acquired skill. So, try new recipes and combinations, and don’t be afraid to fail at first. Eventually, you’ll get better at it. Once you’re an expert, not only will you add amazing flavors to your food, but friends and family fall in love with your cooking, too.
