Herbert Diess worked as a research assistant at Munich Technical University’s Institute for Tool Machines and Plant Management after earning his engineering degree, where he earned a doctorate in assembly automation in 1987.
Since 1988, he has been the head of the Institute for Tool Machines and Plant Management’s Assembly Automation Department. In 1989, he returned to Stuttgart to work for Robert Bosch GmbH.

He was named Technical Director, Planning and Maintenance, of the Robert Bosch facility in Treto, Spain, in 1990, where he had previously served as General Manager.
In 1996, Diess accepted a position as Director, Long-Term and Structural Planning at BMW AG in Munich. He led the Process Consulting Department, initially in the Production Division and then in the Engineering and Technology Division, starting in 1997.
He was then sent to the United Kingdom, where he served as Director of BMW’s Birmingham plant from 1999 to 2000, and then as Director of BMW’s Oxford plant the following year. He was named Director of BMW Motorcycles in 2003.
