    The Importance Of Maintaining Healthy Nails

    Your nails are made up of layers of a protein called keratin. They grow from their base beneath the cuticle in order to shield the tips of fingers and toes from being injured. Not only do they serve to protect your important digits, the fingernails also provide a rigid backing to assist you when you are picking up small objects. They can also be made to appear quite attractive, making them one of the most popular parts of the body to accessorise and use cosmetics on!

    Helping people take proper care of their nails and decorating them artistically is a worldwide business that brings in billions of dollars every year! If you are looking for a great way to work with people in a hands-on setting, then taking a nail technician course would be a great career move for you! Technicians not only beautify nails, they also help customers keep their nails strong and healthy.

    Healthy nails have a smooth texture, are consistent in their colour, and do not have any spots or discolouration. Vertical ridges and white spots are fairly common due to injury but are generally harmless. There are some other conditions that are warning signs signalling the need for attention.

    if your nail technician expresses concerns over the health of your nails, you should definitely seek professional help from your doctor or dermatologist. Some potential problems you might observe include:

    • Misshapen or curled nails.
    • Thinning and/or thickening of the nails.
    • Dark streaks or other changes in nail colour.
    • Lack of new nail growth.
    • Pain under or around the nails.
    • Swelling or bleeding around the nails.
    • The separation of nails from the skin.

    The following are some care tips to help you maintain healthy nails:

    • Keep your nails clean and dry to discourage bacterial growth. Always wear rubber gloves when working with water, when using harsh chemicals, and during housecleaning tasks.
    • Ensure proper nail hygiene by using high-quality nail clippers and scissors when giving your nails a trim. Aim to keep the edges straight and round the tips gently.
    • Keep your nails well moisturised by making sure to apply hand lotion to your nails and cuticles, not just your skin. Doing this will help to hydrate them and keep them healthy.
    • Be sure to apply a protective layer like a nail hardener to give your nails extra strength and provide added protection.
    • Biotin Supplements have been shown to strengthen weak or brittle nails, consult with your doctor about them.

    Now here are some bad practices to avoid in order to safeguard your nails from damage:

    • Hangnails should be handled carefully, clip them off instead of pulling on them to avoid injuring the live tissue.
    • Don’t give in to nail biting and cuticle picking, they are nervous habits that cause harm to the nail bed and increase the chance of infections. 
    • Don’t use harsh nail products like polish remover, use a safe, acetone-free formula instead.
    • Handle problems you find with your nails promptly, seek professional help if you suffer from persistent nail issues or symptoms.
